COMMENTS FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON

I think this has happened two years in a row, but Mother Nature has other ideas about the MCG holding a meeting in January.  The weather was much too icy and too cold to have members drive from Elkhart, Niles or New Carlisle, so we canceled the meeting and used the time at home to create something, especially when you can be lettering during football games!
My husband I spent three wonderful weeks in Ft. Myers, Florida as we always do at holiday time, and my daughter from Ohio and her family joined us as we enjoyed the sun, beach and pool.  I do not have any lettering tools with me when I go to Florida, but will start collecting from my supplies and have a calligraphy box to take there every year.  I did manage to buy an inexpensive sewing machine and actually took it out of the box and read the directions before sewing a button on my husband’s shorts.  I do miss my art room when away though.  When we returned home, I was happy to be in among my art supplies again and had already started a new online class with Harvest Crittenden on Advanced Spencerian.  I thought I would be practicing these new letters every day, but, two days later a friend of mine that I had worked with, play cards with and have known for 28 years had a double stroke.  When I went to the hospital to say hello that first day, I found the husband all alone and no family or friends there with him.  His family is in Missouri and her parents are in Bremen, so I asked if he wanted me to come back the next day and I did so for the next several weeks until she started healing and went to a rehab center in Mishawaka. Two weeks later, she had pneumonia and was back in the hospital, so, not much in the lettering department for me as planned.  Now that she is improving, I can get back to what I love to do, but sometimes you are where you need to be.  I am glad that I was able to be helpful to my friend and her immediate family.

Ginny and Pat at our February meeting

We were all so happy to be together for our February meeting.  It had been a long two months since we were all together talking about calligraphy and art in general. Postponed from January, we brought our exchange pieces we did in December and described our methods in creating an animal themed piece. Then I briefly took the group through some Spencerian lettering, not as a class, but as a taste for this beautiful lettering. Harvest Crittenden is a wonderful teacher, online and in person, and supplies you with as many sample sheets as possible to help you wander through the endless possibilities of Spencerian letters.  Check her out at Acornarts.org.  She has a few online classes a year. I have taken three of them from her and would take more whenever possible.

I was not at the meeting in March, instead spending two weeks in Ft. Myers going to Spring Training games with my daughter and her family. I find that sitting in the bleachers in the hot sun is not my cup of tea, but the standing room only tickets, which are much cheaper, allows me to stand in the shade with a cool breeze blowing my way. The games are fun and my 5-year old grandson loves the game so it is fun to watch him.

At the March meeting, members pulled a name of a book that you probably have not made before, and will make that book by the August meeting for our annual exchange. I know some of you will be challenged by something new, but there are so many tutorials on the internet that you can pick one that works for you.  Enjoy and have fun with it.  I look forward to seeing all the different books you come up with at the August picnic.
Luce Zolna
March also brought Luce Zolna to Mishawaka with her marbling talents for two days.  We learned how to alum and then marble the paper in carageenan on the first day and on the second we went wild with some new designs.  Luce was a patient and encouraging instructor and I can’t wait to see some of the things that will be created with our marbled papers. It is so inspiring to be with friends of the same likes and have uninterrupted time creating something new.  Thank you to Maureen Trubac for housing Luce and to Sharon Esmont for securing the venue and opening the doors for us each day, as well as those who stayed and helped to clean up and put back together the chairs and tables at Whispering Pines!
It’s spring here in the Michiana area, but as I am writing this newsletter, it is snowing outside and has been most of the day.  There isn’t much accumulation, but that 70 degree day we had last week is in our rearview mirror for now.  Spring gives us a new start for the year, so take out some calligraphy or painting tools and create.
Cindy Bowles – Cindy is a member of the MCG and has recently become a certified Zentangle instructor and has offered to come to South Bend to teach us the art of zentangling.  Some of us have dabbled in this art form, but now we are going to have some real instruction.  The Zentangle one-day workshop will be on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at Christ the King Church.  More information and list of supplies will be coming in the next newsletter.

Paper Marbling Workshop with Luce Zolna - Renee Tuveson

The marbling workshop was a long awaited and very special experience for me. I had dabbled a couple of times with small success and mediocre results.

We mixed 2 level tbsp of Carrageenan to a gallon of water using a blender, mixing about 5 cups and a time and pouring into an empty milk jug. We used an 11 X 14 plastic “photo box” (or its equivalent) as our tray.

Luce explained the importance of covering the entire sheet of paper with alum. If you missed a spot you would not have the proper coverage of paint and a white spot in your design. Sometimes that would be OK and sometimes NOT. After applying the alum (1 ¼ tsp per cup of water), we allowed the paper to dry and as long as the shine was gone we could “print” our image.

We used Golden Fluid Acrylics, diluting a tbsp of paint with a few drops of water and dropping it into the water with a whisk and/or eyedropper. We used various tools, “combs”, “rakes” and skewers to push and pull the paint to make our designs. Then gently laying the paper on top of the paint, and  pulling it out over the edge of the tray “Voila” we had a beautiful piece of art!
Luce had a wonderful handout showing the different techniques for making designs, the basic stone, snail, gel git, chevron and nonpareil to mention a few.

It was wonderful going around and looking at every ones designs. The colors were wonderful. We tried various papers including arches text wove and arches black cover. Absolutely beautiful papers and everyone had great results due to the care of our wonderful instructor Luce Zolna!

A good time was had by all and I was blessed with a wonderful back-rub by Ginny

Policy for MCG
Our workshops seem to have people sign up and then decide not to attend. We have been very generous in returning monies paid for the workshop if someone decides not to attend at the last minute, but we are going to have a change in this policy.  There will be a nominal fee if you drop out of the workshop.  If there would be an emergency, for instance, a birth of a child or grandchild, illness, etc., then the board will take this under advisement to decide on a course of action regarding a refund.  Also, if the workshop is filled and there is someone to take your place, that would also quality for a refund. So please, if you want to sign up for the workshop, make sure that you put that date on your calendar as a commitment.  We have a small calligraphy group and we struggle to fill workshops at times.  We need all of you to attend as many as possible so that we can continue to have quality instructors.
Are you on Facebook? If so, look up your favorite calligraphers because they are on Facebook also.  I like to look at Barbara Close, Reggie Ezell, Julian Waters, John Stevens, Rachel Yallop, Pendragons, Capital City Scribes, Yukimi Annand, etc.  There is a lot of beautiful calligraphy on these pages that will get your inspired.  Also look at Joanne Fink and Barbara Lever’s Facebook Page.  And then, there is always Pinterest.  Oh my, so many places to be inspired!
PO Box in South Bend – Due to a lack of much mail at our Post Office box in South Bend, we have suspended any mail sent to that address.  If you have anything to send to the MCG, please send to Maureen Trubac 50685 Mercury Drive, Granger, IN 46530 or Ginny VanderHey 51854 Stoney Creek Drive, Elkhart, IN 46514. When monies are due for a workshop or dues, they will now go to one of these addresses.
In February we lost longtime member, Henni Akkerman.  Henni was a talented artist whose work was displayed in the South Bend area frequently.  Her love of the arts included painting, calligraphy and jewelry.  Henni had a dry wit that was enjoyed by all.  We extend our deepest condolences to Henni’s family.
Also, our condolences go out to Anna Schlemma who lost her mom, Anna Schmidt, on December 27, 2014 and to Diana Stamper who lost her husband, Larry, on February 25, 2015.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

COMMENTS FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON

My good friend Bea from Tennessee was here for a few days in October and we enjoyed our time together running to Michigan City to shop and go to Chesterton where she always gets some Swedish sausage to take home. We made a few more stops along the way and the next few days were spent driving to Middlebury to get the bulk oatmeal and flour and to see the trees in all their fall glory, and they were spectacular. Another trip to Bonneyville Mill to get some fresh ground wheat flour and corn meal where the Dahlia Society had a simply gorgeous display of colorful flowers. Fall is a beautiful time of year and I am truly amazed at the colorful display nature puts on for us every year.

On October 19th, Pat West and I packed the car, and I mean packed, with clothes and supplies to head 4 3/4 hours north to Boyne Hills, Michigan and Lake Louise for an art retreat lasting until Friday, October 24th. The trip flies by when you have someone with common interests to talk and laugh with. Not only did we have supplies, we brought muffins, granola bars and the makings for cannoli cupcakes to share at the first dinner. You know how calligraphers like to eat. We drove on highway 131 all the way there only turning east for the last 8 1/2 miles toward Lake Louise. The autumn colors were just past peak, but they were spectacular. I think I took about 150 pictures that week, half of which were taken when we took a walk or two every day.
Lake Louise

On Monday morning, we met in a circle of wonderfully talented ladies and two fantastic instructors, Rosie Kelley and Pam Palsrud. They guided us every day from deep breathing and finding our muse to working on arches text wove, our favorite paper, with pigments, sumi, sink art, water-soluble pastels and carbon pencils. We were messy for the first two days and then cut up our papers and made them into books. Some participants lettered and some, like me, wanted to take them home, find the right quote and line and letter in the quiet of my studio. Pat and I were perfect roommates wanting to do the same things like walking in the woods, reading in the room and driving into Boyne City to have dinner at the Red Mesa Grill with 8 other ladies on Wednesday night. A big thank you to Pat for all her help when my back went out on the next to the last day and packing the car when I couldn't lift my suitcase and supplies! We really had a magical week with calligraphers and artists from near and far, Chicago, Kalamazoo, Louisville, Cincinnati, Columbus, Ohio, Granger and Elkhart, Indiana. We drove back reminiscing about all the techniques we learned and all the new friends we made and hope that we can do it again in the future. Thanks to Marianne Burke and Anna Schlemma for organizing this wonderful adventure and keeping us organized every day. We are so blessed to have been included in the Lake Louise Retreat.

Books made at the Lake Louise Retreat
Our November 1st meeting brought together about 7 of our members to spend a day making cards together. We brought all out tools including paper cutters and envelope templates to prepare for the holidays or future cards to keep on hand. Or new member Brenda Harley, came to watch and learn. I spent a bit of time with Brenda playing with copperplate and we introduced her to lots of things the other members were working on. Thanks to Sharon for opening up the church for us even though she could not stay to join us and for returning to lock up!

Our December meeting is one of our favorites where we share Christmas and do an exchange. This year we had decided on drawing an animal but it had to have some lettering on it, even if only one letter. The animals were very diverse but the exchange was fun to do. I loved hearing Angie West gasp every time another exchange was revealed. They were all beautiful and you can see the work that was put into them for the Christmas exchange. Thanks to everyone who participated! You stepped up to the plate and delivered!!!

I would be amiss if I did not mention the wonderful food we enjoyed after our meeting. Maureen made her wonderful marinated pork loins, and there were lots of accompaniments to go with it....stuffed mushrooms, salmon spread with crackers, strawberry pretzel salad, roasted veggies, pasta, mushroom and peas dish, homemade bread, salad, macaroni and cheese and for dessert, flourless chocolate cake, biscotti and cookies and Jo's famous pear salad. Everything was delicious!!! We also decided on out usual $400 in donations to three deserving places.

I also want to thank our hardworking MCG Board, Sharon Esmont, who opens the church for us every month, Maureen Trubac who diligently handles all the money, Pat West who takes notes at the meetings, Jo McPherson,  who sends out all the reminders regarding meetings and any other information we need sent to members, and Renee Tuveson, our blog coordinator. Thanks to all of you for your advice and opinion which are always well received.

We have a jam packed year planned for next year including four meetings with learning and/or revisiting lettering.

Hope you enjoyed your holidays and start the year refreshed and renewed with a continues love of lettering and art. Now that we don't have to do any baking and shopping for Christmas gifts, spend some time in your art room creating!

COMMENTS FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON

Sometimes it is not easy to find time to work in the art room, but in the summer my daughters and my grandchildren come to visit and enjoy the pool in the backyard. My grandson is now 5 years old and can swing a mean bat, so we spend lots of time outside in the yard with me throwing and him hitting.  We even have bases so he can learn the sport correctly.  One day he hit the ball into the bushes and I went to retrieve it.  I knelt on the ground to look under the bush, and I was attacked by bees protecting their hive.  Ouch.  One sting was on the side of my face and the other on the inside of my leg near the knee.  I didn’t know how badly they would itch, especially during the night, and finally wound up at the doctor’s office where she pronounced it infected.  Great.  Now I needed an antibiotic, but was on the road to recovery.  Guess I should have been in my art room in the house instead of outside!  Now everyone is gone and I can do my chores in the morning and spend the afternoon in the art room.  Well, part of the time, I have a dress to finish sewing for one granddaughter and the 8-year old brought me a pattern so I can make her a dress a la Elsa in the movie Frozen.  I’ll have to squeeze in some artwork in between!
July’s meeting was highlighted by Barbara Fedder and her demonstration on pastels. Barbara Fedder showed us a demonstration on pastels. Barbara explained the different types of pastels soft to hard and what papers to use. Barbara’s demo was very informative and her work is realistic and exemplary. A group of sample papers including Pergamenta, Bugra and Arches Text Wove was passed out to members so that they can have paper to try different and nibs on or just keep to become familiar with different textures for future use. Thanks to Pat for spending an afternoon with me cutting up paper and putting them together for everyone.

MCG's calligraphy for Trish Taylor
In August we had our annual picnic at my house and the weather was spectacular for us to be sitting outside enjoying the breeze.  We discussed instructors for next year, meetings for the rest of this year and a few other things thrown in.  We will all be making a 3 x 3 piece of art work, calligraphy, watercolor, etc., for a fellow calligrapher in Texas who is recuperating from a double lung transplant.  Trish Taylor creates beautiful work and we look forward to her being back with the Capital City Scribes group near Austin, Texas.  Trish has to live in Houston for a year to be near her doctors while she is healing so we thought we would send our good wishes to her.  By the time you read this, it has probably gone in the mail.

We also discussed what our Christmas Exchange would be in December and have decided on an Animal Theme using whatever paper or canvas you desire and not being larger than 8 x 10.  It also has to have some sort of calligraphy on it, even one letter if that’s what you want to do.
Next we drew out two names and gave away two $25. gift certificates for Paper and Ink.  Marty Mitchell and Jo McPherson were the recipients.  We all wanted our name drawn for that prize.  It’s always fun to buy more art supplies!

And finally we had an accordion book exchange.  Paige McKean (daughter of Angie West) passed out the wrapped books and they were all stunning.  When one was opened, the creator talked about the theme that they used.  A lot of eye candy and everyone who made a book got to take another home.  These are a challenge for some, but the results are rewarding.  Thanks everyone for your artwork.  Also thanks to Jo Mcpherson who didn’t get her book done, but entertained us with the back story of how she envisioned the book coming together.

On August 9, Anna Schlemma and I drove to Kalamazoo for a day of Gesso and Beyond with Tina Cronkite and the Pen Dragons at the Parchment Library. Tina went through making marks, sink art and gessoing pieces throughout the day which we thoroughly enjoyed.  At the end of the day, we all made a book with our pieces that we made.  As always, the Pen Dragons are a welcoming group and we enjoy being with them.

Our September meeting brought out 16 members to our monthly meeting and a demonstration of a Jacob’s ladder and a mini Jacob’s ladder by Maureen Trubac.  Thanks Maureen.  Now we all know another book design we can make.  There were several show and tell items including new books, an accordion book for a retirement celebration.

And finally, Anna Schlemma, Rose Kopec, Pat West and I will be going to an Art Retreat at Lake Louise in Michigan the third week in October which we are all so looking forward to.  This is Pat’s and my first time at the retreat and we are excited about spending a whole week doing art projects led by Rosie Kelly and Pam Pallsrud.  We hope to come to the November meeting with our beautiful show and tell.  We will probably have to bring our parkas and snowshoes since we will be quite a distance north for a week. Brrrr.
