A MESSAGE FROM THE GUILD PRESIDENT
It has been a busy year and I can't believe it is already July! So sorry for this late posting - but as they say Life Happens!
I have been taking many classes, is there a group for those addicted to zoom classes? Last February I signed up for "Introduction to Geometic Art" with Clarissa Grandi in the UK. I have always loved geometric art but am not a math person. Clarissa is a math teacher, but she removed much of the math and we just were able to follow her instructions and I am hooked! I can even reverse engineer simple designs and create them. I stress the "simple", though my way of doing something and the correct way are totally different!

APRIL 9, 2022 Meeting

Discussed: In person meetings, still watching the Covid numbers and it is still out there. Another booster is planned but most have not received it yet. Picnic in August will be at Ginny's house as in the past. Last year we were there were only 6 of us and we were on the screened in porch. Also discussed Skillshare as several members also belong and enjoy skillshare.
Our project for this month was to share our favorite tools as this is a favorite and we have done it before.
A quick rundown of the tool are as follows:
Anna – Vintage Page Design Wood Punching Cradle (Susan made one herself and has
sent everyone the instructions). Also, Anna enjoys the Caran D’Arche Nip Holder.
Ginny – Oblique Nip Holder and 3 types of pencils. She uses pencils all the time.
Judy – Pilot Eno Colored Mechanical Pencils and a Johnson Level & Tool 9250 Laser
Mouse .
Kristy – Sparkle Pop Pens
Laura – Sakura Micron Pens
Marty – WC Blending Solution & Gouache (Solutiona according to Renee’s
typo—sounds more exotic)

MAY 7,2022 Meeting

Discussed: Our sister group "Pen Dragons" had their first hybrid meeting, that is both using zoom and in person. It was fun and interesting but they see that they will need to spend some money for it to be a really useful way to go. Our guild is much smaller then Pen Dragons and we may try a hybrid meeting in the future as Angie W volunteered to help.
Traci V gave us a demo of Padlet and we will give it a try. Padlet is a fairly simple way to share your work and ideas to the group while not using regular social media.
Our project for this month was to do color charts using watercolor pencils. What fun this was, we really enjoyed everyone's samples.
JUNE 4, 2022 Meeting

Discussed: Again we discussed in person meetings, the "OWL" is a devise that sets in the center of a group and rotates toward anyone who speaks. This is apparently the best thing to use but the cost is approximately $1,000, and this is beyond our means. We will continue to research this.
We now have a new treasurer! Thank you Angie W for taking over, Laurie H has retired though she will continue to be a member.
Dues are due in July! Membership forms will be sent out via email, please fill out and mail with your check.
Our project this month was to do a single letter, using our watercolor pencils to illuminate.

Announcement from the Board
The Board of the MCG is excited to announce a free class to the members. The class will be “Dirds” by Suzie Beringer on October 1, 9:00 to 11:00 am with a second session from 1:00 – 3:00 pm on the same day.
Think about having a quick lunch and some working time between sessions.
Live session limited to the first 30 new or renewing members this year. Memberships are due July 1 every year.
The class will be available for viewing for another month. Please contact Angie or Ginny with questions.
I found Suzie on Instagram and am wowed with her breath. She was supposed to teach at the calligraphy conference that was cancelled this summer and we are lucky to be able to book her.

These little quirky calligraphic birds were developed by Suzie Beringer as another way to use our lettering skills - but they are so much fun to make….flapping wings, bases on springs etc…..also, they make great gifts. There are many ways to display them which is part of the fun….the possibilities are endless.
Suzie’s Bio
Suzie Beringer is a lettering artist who makes her home in the Pacific Northwest. With a degree in commercial art with a life-time passion for calligraphy and mark making, she is constantly exploring new possibilities and pushing herself creatively. Her work has been published in Letter Arts Review as well as other publications. As a teacher she loves to share her passion for mark making and design with others. As an artist Suzie loves the challenge and discovery that lettering on different surfaces brings. POLICY FOR MCG
Our workshops seem to have people sign up and then decide not to attend. We have been very generous in returning monies paid for the workshop if someone decides not to attend at the last minute, but we are going to have a change in this policy. There will be a nominal fee if you drop out of a workshop. If there would be an emergency, for instance the birth of a grandchild, illness, etc., then the board will take this under advisement to decide on a course of action regarding a refund. Also, if the workshop is filled, and there is someone to take your place, that would also qualify for a refund. So please, if you want to sign up foe the workshop, make sure that you put that date on your calendar as a commitment. We have a small calligraphy group and we struggle to fill workshops at times. We need all of you to attend as many as possible so that we can continue to have quality instructors.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP
Annual dues of $15 are due at the July meeting. Our annual dues have not changed in many years and are put to good use for supplies for our Make It/Take It at meetings and our annual raffle in August, and in December our donation to local charities. Please remember to bring your dues to the July meeting or send to Laurie Heyden, our treasurer at 18292 Courtland Dr., South Bend, Indiana 46637.
