Who knew such beautiful letters could come from pencil? Peter Thornton taught us to see letters as texture with graphite as our ink. We used pressure and a light touch, narrow and wide strokes. We layered tall and short variations of the same quote, filling in some spaces and leaving others open. We looked at negative space, and graphic elements, and designed our letters around them...all with a pencil.
