OCTOBER SCRIBNOTE

OCTOBER 1, 2021 SCRIBNOTE

A MESSAGE FROM THE GUILD PRESIDENT

Hello October! On the 8th of this month my husband and I will celebrate 56 years of marriage! Quite an accomplishment for a couple of teenagers – Who said it couldn’t be done?

Summer flew by so fast I didn’t get any of the many things I planned done! Instead of going out and enjoying the summer I spent much of my time reading. Since April I have read at least 20 books a month. Crazy, part of it was avoidance as I am still in kind of a PSTD frame of mind from Covid.

Anyway, I have started to sign up for classes again. I am taking a computer class, genealogy class, and origami class with our local Forever Learning. On the calligraphy side I am signed up for Jen Sweeney’s “Winter Wedge Wonderland” beginning Oct 4; “Adventure with Pointed Pen” with An Vanhentenrijk beginning Oct 8; Amity Parks new class “Slow and Steady” and “Chunky Minuscules” with the PenDragon Guild of Kalamazoo the last two week-ends in October. Also, a couple of art classes that are not calligraphy related so again I am off to the races!

Our July 7, 2021 Meeting via Zoom

Quote: “In art as in love, instinct is enough.” – Anatole France

We discussed the picnic to be held at Ginny’s house. Per our discussion it was decided that we would wear masks accommodating members who chose not to be vaccinated. This year we are waiving the membership fee for members in good standing and the membership fee will be $15.00 for new and lapsed members. Next year the fee will go up to $20.00.

Quote: “We need ART because it moves us the same way it moves others who are nothing like us, except in the way their heart splits open, which in the end is all the likeness that counts.” – Samantha Reynolds.

Even though our group was small we had a wonderful lunch and marvelous time. Membership forms were distributed and members were asked to contact Laurie to verify that their information was the same and to update any changes that have been made.

Thank you Ginny for hosting again this year!

Our September 11, 2021 IN-PERSON MEETING Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Quote: “Some people just make you feel better when you’re around them. They are sunshine to your soul and medicine for your mind.” Julian Lennon (son of John Lennon)

Our first official in person meeting in over a year was attended by 10 new and returning members. Welcome back Connie Wendt! So good to see you again, and two possible new members Shanon O. and Peggy S. members of  Christ the King Lutheran Church who are looking for some instruction in the calligraphic arts.

Anna S brought in a “bunch” of books to sell, many beautiful bargains, the guild bought several to be used as give a ways at some of our events.

I did a demo on creating a mandala using a compass, gel pens, colored pencils, black and colored paper. My inspiration was Heather Fidler, #featherfidler on instagram, who does beautifully complicated mandalas’. Mine are just a starting point.

POLICY FOR MCG

Our workshops seem to have people sign up and then decide not to attend. We have been very generous in returning monies paid for the workshop if someone decides not to attend at the last minute, but we are going to have a change in this policy. There will be a nominal fee if you drop out of a workshop. If there would be an emergency, for instance the birth of a grandchild, illness, etc., then the board will take this under advisement to decide on a course of action regarding a refund. Also, if the workshop is filled, and there is someone to take your place, that would also qualify for a refund. So please, if you want to sign up foe the workshop, make sure that you put that date on your calendar as a commitment. We have a small calligraphy group and we struggle to fill workshops at times. We need all of you to attend as many as possible so that we can continue to have quality instructors.

ARE YOU ON FACEBOOK?

If so, look up your favorite calligraphers, because they are on Facebook also. I like to look at Barbara Blose, Reggie Ezell, Julian Waters, John Stevens, Rachel Yallop, Pendragons, Capital City Scribes, Yukimi Annand, etc.. There are lots of beautiful

July 2021 Scribnote

JULY 1, 2021 SCRIBNOTE

A MESSAGE FROM THE GUILD PRESIDENT

Things finally seem to be opening up and you can even go out without a mask some places. The virus is not gone and we must continue to be cautious. I think it's important to get vaccinated. The rest of the world continues to struggle with the virus, mainly because of the lack of availability of the vaccine.

We have continued with Zoom for our meetings and personally I find them very enjoyable. We are looking into having an in-person meeting for September at the church. Masks will be required for those who have not been vaccinated. We have talked about continuing the Zoom meetings as well, mid month and during the winter months. Everyone seems to be happy about that. There are a lot of benefits to having the meetings using Zoom, such as everyone gets a pretty good look at the show and tell items, also if you can't attend the meeting you can watch the recording and not miss anything! Not to mention the advantage during the winter months and to our few long distance members.

I continue to take classes on Zoom but not as many as I was. Over the past 3 months I have taken advanced spencerian with Harvest Crittenden, a couple of drawing classes with Jamie Morin, Celtic Knot with Cheryl Tefft, cookie decorating with Andrea Reno, bone script with Carol Dubosch

A short overview of our meetings:

Ginny's Grilled Pizza

Food processor:

3 1/2 cups of flour

1/2 tsp of salt

Mix together:

1 1/4 cups of warm water

1 package of yeast

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 teaspoon of sugar

Add wet ingredients to dry in food processor (I'm sure this can be done by hand) you may need to add a bit more flour if the dough is too thick. Put the dough into a bowl that you have added a tablespoon of oil to moisten. Let rise about an hour or so.

For the grill....I cut the dough into six pieces, flatten out and place on a pan sprinkled with corn meal.

We spray the grill with Pam or an Olive Oil spray, put the pieces of dough that have been patted down or rolled out, maybe about 6 inches, onto the grill. When the dough gets a nice grill mark, not dark, turn it over and working quickly, brush lightly with olive oil, put on the tomato sauce, cheese and whatever toppings you like. Let grill till chesses is a bit melted or the dough is crispy and has a grill mark on the bottom. If it starts to get too cooked transfer to the top shelf on the grill so you don't burn them. Enjoy!

Quote: "Success is a worn down pencil." Robert Ronschenberg

Anna Schlemma did a demo of her miniature paintings and the creative juices were flowing. Lots of tips and hints using gouache, water color, markers, colored pencils stencils, cutouts and ephemera. and to quote Judy Theurel. " Our lovely Anna Schlemma lead us in miniature painting. Several of us participated right along with her. She made it look sooooo easy....and it was! Not only did she demonstrate how to do these mini paintings, but she gave us lots of ideas to embellish them and how to make them uniquely ours. She suggested several small keepsakes that we could use to make our paintings special. There are not enough words to describe how much fun this demonstration was. Thank you, Anna !!!!"

Discussed: Picnic - we will determine at the next meeting if we will bring our own lunch or do a pot luck as usual.
July is the month we pay our guild dues  and Angie West suggested that we skip dues this year and everyone agreed this would be a great idea. We will still need to update all member information.
Angie was asked about scheduling a marbling play date with the guild and Angie was receptive to the idea just need to figure out a date and place (probably at the church)
Our dear friend and member Linda Elder will be relocating to California, we will all miss her and will make sure to invite her to our zoom meetings in the future.
